The Joys (and the DANGERS) of Running Barefoot...

Is there a more evocative word picture than running barefoot on the beach? It conveys a carefree attitude, a recreational, thoroughly free-form time and just plain fun! It conveys such a variety of positive emotions that it's hard to use it to portray anything negative. Hard, but not impossible...

I call your attention to the issue of our often running through the internet “barefoot,” so to speak. In plain-speak surfing the web with no malware protection. To illustrate just how dangerous this is, I will extend the beach analogy a bit.

Hazards at the beach, far from the connotation it may carry for all of us, are everywhere. The water poses a deadly drowning hazard. The sand, commingled with our clothes, shoes and sundry food and recreational electronics (any more,) yields at least inconvenience, and in the worst case, havoc. Add to the burning sun and the beach sand bits of shell, dead (or not) but still deadly jellyfish, and other forms of sea life and flotsam and you have real potential for a mess.

So what's this guy sayin'? In a word: antimalware.
Malware is a generic term that encompasses the world of spyware, viruses, trojan-horses, worms and a plethora of bad crap that runs around out there. Running about the internet with expired or worse, no antimalware is an extremely risky proposition. With today’s collection of miscreants out there, from identity thieves and data kidnappers, to spammers and private and state-sponsored spies.

Most of the damage I see in this job - by a wide margin - is done by malware. No matter what you paid for your computer, it isn't worth the risk to your data - photos, music, e-books - to go barefoot to the beach. Nutshell; invest in some good malware protection for your laptop, tablet, phone or desktop. You'll thank me later.
